The opening day of fishing at the lakes on the Quincy Wildlife Refuge was a chilly one, but there was some hot fishing going at a few of the lakes. Martha Lake, found east of George, which is always outstanding on March 1st was again providing limit catches of rainbow for the hordes of anglers that fished the lake. Most of the fish were 10 to 11 inches, but there several rainbow of 24 inches and bigger taken on opening day. There is good shore access at Martha, which makes it a popular destination. The lake that I checked on that was keeping anglers very happy was Caliche Lake, which is west of George, was producing trout at a clip similar to Martha. Caliche also offers great shore access all the way around the lake and people were catching fish everywhere I looked. The trout at Caliche were 10 to 12 inches, and I didn’t see any carryover rainbow taken here. Something to note about Caliche is that there is a healthy perch population in the lake. Anglers may consider baiting their hooks with nightcrawlers and using a bobber, if they want to add perch to their bag.
