A recent news release from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife had everyone cheering at a meeting of the Icicle Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Seems that the department’s enforcement officers successfully caught and arrest three individuals who where illegally fishing, fishing in closed waters and during a closed season. The three anglers were caught with salmon and steelhead and fines for the multiple charges range up to $5,000.00 per count and up to a year in jail. The arrest was made thanks to an anonymous tip, which is becoming more and more frequent is successful arrests and prosecutions by the department. TU members at the meeting were frustrated by reports and even sightings of people take Chinook salmon from the Wenatchee River. It was brought up that one of the most successful enforcement tools in recent years has been the digital camera, which records the offending individuals, their vehicles and license plates, etc. All of this information can be passed on the enforcement without confronting the suspects. The group also wants to arrange a C.O.R.T. class which will give them more information on how to help enforcement. People are less likely to commit violations, knowing that there are “eyes in the woods”.
