The kokanee fishing on Lake Chelan is hardly worth trying this season, but the mackinaw, or lake trout action, continues to be good. I took three buddies of mine from the West Side to Chelan last Friday, and we had a blast. I spent quite a bit of time looking for Chinook salmon, without any luck, but when I put my baits down near the bottom, we got lakers. Tom Vershuren, Howie Hunter and Jerry Day all got fish, and one was a 31-incher. I cooked a fillet the next day as one of the items on the menu for the Cooking TV Show, and Vershuren was very impressed. He thought the laker was as good or better than the salmon he was used to. Fresh makes a big difference, but these lakers are very underrated for their table quality. I want to remind everyone that there will be a Guides Night at Town Ford in Wenatchee on Wednesday, June 23rd, starting at 6 p.m. Summer-salmon fishing guides will be there to meet the public. Folks will be able to meet these fishing experts, pick their brains, and even book a trip. This is the first time such a thing has been offered, and I hope to see you there.
