I was able to spend a couple of days at Curlew Lake near Republic recently. I have spent a Memorial weekend or two at this trout lake, but have always wanted to try it earlier in the spring. Once again I found the trout fishing excellent. Limits of fat rainbow are easy to come by here, and the trout have a special quality that makes them especially perfect for the pan. The lake is loaded with Mysis shrimp, which imparts a deep pink color to the trout flesh and the flavor is fabulous. I trolled the lake in my favorite spot behind an island across from the State Park. Using an orange and yellow floating Rapala and an orange Martin Red Magic was all it to get the attention of the rainbow here. Jack Walker treated me to a meal of these trout, while taping a show for Cooking TV, and they were a real treat. If you’re looking for a destination for Memorial Weekend, try Tiffany’s Resort first, and if they are full, the State Park will have room for you and it is a beautiful park.
