Fishing for late summer run salmon on the upper Columbia River below Wells Dam and in the Brewster area can be very good right now. Many of the fish are getting close to spawning, but there is the occasional bright fish in the mix and there is always a chance of catching a very bright fall run fish. There is a special season this year at Chelan Falls below the Chelan powerhouse, and fishing can also be productive out in the main Columbia. I fished here recently with a group of anglers, while we “taking a meeting” on fish related stuff, and had a blast catching some nice kings. I put one in my boat not 15 minutes from leaving the launch. Ron Oules, who has a guide service in Brewster, landed three fish, including one that weighed well over 30 pounds. He was jet planning herring for his fish. There are some very specific boundaries and rules that apply to the special salmon season below the powerhouse on the Chelan River, and I would recommend that anglers go to the Department of Fish and Wildlife web site and carefully read the details. There should be about 2,000 salmon returning to this area.
