By Dave Graybill

I am planning to get out for some walleye fishing this week and I wondered how the fishing was a Potholes Reservoir. I talked to Shelby Ross, noted guide on the big reservoir, and he had a great report for me. He had gone out by himself the other day, and in just an hour landed five fish. One was 23 inches and one was 25 inches. He had clients out the next day and pulling crank baits, he got 13 walleye, some crappie from 10 to 14 inches, a half dozen big perch and a bunch of bass. I would go down to Potholes just for a chance to get crappie of that size. He said those who troll bait are having a tough time. There are so many bullheads feeding here right now it is hard to keep them off. He suggests pulling Flicker Shads and Shad Raps rather than trolling bottom bouncers and worms. He thinks that the walleye bite was off earlier this year as there were so many bait fish available to them. It looks like things are changing now. I am going to head for Potholes this week, and I will let you know how we do.
