The sockeye season opening day on Lake Wenatchee turned out to be spectacular. The weather was perfect and angler turnout was at record levels. The WDFW counted 180 boats fishing for sockeye, which translates to about 450 anglers. Imagine what it will be like this weekend! Angler success was good, too. I talked to several anglers that either got limits or near to it. The actual average number of fish taken per angler was 3.5, which is outstanding for any fishery. The fish are in exceptional shape right now, with good water temperatures to move fish quickly through the Tumwater Canyon. Sockeye are always bigger in Lake Wenatchee than their Columbia River cousins, too. The fishermen I talked to are finding the fish deep, even in the early morning. Those who put their baits down at least 50 feet are finding the best success. Sockeye re hitting a variety of offerings, and many anglers favor a three hook set up. Remember no bait is allowed on Lake Wenatchee and hooks must be barbless. Release all bull trout immediately. Get there early to find parking at the State Park ramp.
