By Dave Graybill

Monday was my wedding anniversary, and lucky me, my wife loves go out in the boat. She wanted to go to Lake Chelan and cruise around, so I threw in some kokanee gear and off we went. We launched the Smokercraft at 25 Mile Creek. I had a report of kokanee being caught off Prince Creek, and we headed up lake. It was a perfect day to be running up lake on Chelan. It took about a half hour to get there, but when I put out the bow mount and looked for tell tale marks of kokanee I found none. I ran across the lake and tried again. Nothing. We pulled into a bay where I saw some surface activity and put the gear out. In no time I had a fat cutthroat on the line. I still wasn’t marking anything like a school of kokanee, though. We were running short on time, but as I was running down lake I would see fish on the surface. When I put out the kokanee gear I got a cutthroat every time. They are everywhere. I saw them surfacing all the way back to 25 Mile Creek. I never did mark any kokanee. If you want to have some fun while you are enjoying the scenery of running around on upper Lake Chelan, just take some trolling gear along and you will catch a bunch of cutthroat.
