The Brewster Derby is going on this weekend, so the Brewster Pool will be a busy spot on the upper Columbia. I wish all the participants good luck in their quest for catching big kings to win big prize money. I will be very interested in the results, as this is usually a very good indication of what anglers can expect of our summer run fishery in this area. I talked to a couple of guides earlier this week and asked about the king fishing in the Brewster Pool. As no surprise most anglers still want to target sockeye, even when fishing for kings is now open. The attraction of sockeye is huge here. The numbers, when we get them, make getting limits of sockeye an easy proposition, and everyone knows that the table quality of these fish is absolutely the best you can get in the upper Columbia. I also talked to a friend about smallmouth fishing around the mouth and into the Okanogan River. A recent tournament saw the big fish weigh in at over 5 pounds and the winning weight was over 20 pounds. There’s great smallmouth fishing in this area, too.
