By Dave Graybill

I got a call from Travis Maitland, District Biologist for Region 2, telling me that he had some fun fishing Nason Creek, near the Smithbrook Road on Stevens Pass. I can’t remember ever fishing Nason, and I got Tom Verschuren to come along and explore this small stream. We parked the truck next to the bridge right off Highway 2, and spent most of our time fishing downstream from here. The streambed is solid rock with some sandy bottom. It is not particularly deep, but wading can be tricky as you rock hop over broken boulders. There are cutthroat in the small pools behind the big rocks. Lots of them. We both got fish on a Parachute Adams. Later, on a different stretch closer to Coles Corner, we switched to Stimulators and did well with this pattern. I even added a small Hare’s Ear dropper and caught fish on this small nymph, too. We really enjoyed getting out on this small stream as it was new water for both of us. Don’t expect to catch fish any bigger than 10 inches, but it sure is fun. I have to thank Travis for a great time for a day of fly fishing.
