By Dave Graybill

I wanted to see if the fishing off Medicare Beach on Potholes Reservoir was any good yet this winter. My brother in law Tom was willing to go, too, so off we went Tuesday morning. It was going to be chilly, but the forecast was for some sunshine and very little wind. When we arrived, I was surprised to see the whole beach vacant. I am used to seeing trucks and cars lined up along here and even a fire or two burning on the beach. I did see an area where people had braced their rods with rocks, so I thought, why not start here? We baited up with our tried and true marshmallow and shrimp combos that has worked so well for us when fishing from the bank in other areas and cast out as far as we could. There is a shallow slope to the bottom here, so I wanted to get our baits as far out as we could. Then we waited and waited and waited. Nothing was happening. We were visited by two anglers who were interested in how we were doing, and that was the highlight of our morning. One said he was going to try Long Lake the next day and shoot me a note if he did any good. Well, I am waiting.
