By Dave Graybill

I found a crack in my schedule last Thursday that gave me the opportunity to get out and do some fishing. Fortunately, my fishing friend Rollie Schmitten, also had the day free. We had been talking about getting down to Rocky Ford Creek, near Ephrata, since before the Holidays. We were finally going to make it happen. I had checked the forecast and it was supposed to be warmer than my last visit to the Ford. This was good news as the last time I fished there I was plagued with icy guides. That made the casting even more difficult. The places I like to fish are a challenge enough, and ice in the guides was a real problem. We started at one of the places that had produced several big fish for me earlier this winter, and to my surprise we didn’t even get a bump. We were striping Mini Leeches, which had been irresistible in the past. We separated to try to find some hungry fish. I decided to switch to an indicator and Scud and lost a big fish and landed a smaller on fairly quickly. Just before we packed it, Rollie cast an Ultra Scud, without an indicator from spot where we started, and he hooked and landed a dandy.
