When I was at the Quincy Pike Minnow Derby at Crescent Bar it reminded me that I have wanted to fish here for smallmouth bass for years. On Wednesday of this week I finally did it. The forecast was for high winds, but I figured we would avoid the wind as we would be fishing in the channel in front of the cliffs and behind the bar. I was right. My wife, her sister and husband Tom and I had calm water and great fishing. We got off to a slow start trying Senkos and top water lures along the islands and basalt slides. I had just about given up when I suggested we throw come crank baits out the back of the boat and troll. Within minutes we got a double. Keeping the boat tight to shore we trolled along and boated over 20 smallmouth. Many of them were pushing 3 pounds. I think the fishing will get even better when the water temperature here warms a bit. Grant County PUD has a brand new launch and parking area that can handle 70 boats. It’s across from the refurbished marina. Everything boaters need is right here.
