By Dave Graybill

I spent some time with students at the Department of Fisheries at the U of W on Tuesday, spent the night and headed back to Leavenworth on Wednesday morning. I got back about 10:30 and threw my gear in the boat for a trip to Lake Chelan. My wife, her sister Diane and her husband Tom wanted to do some kokanee fishing on the lake, so off we went. We launched at Mill Bay at about noon. I put out a couple of rods with plug cut herring on them and trolled for kings for a while. No takers by the time we got to Rocky Point, so I switched to kokanee gear on all four rods. It didn’t take long to find willing kokanee here. For some reason we were having the worst time we have ever had putting fish in the net. We easily lost as many as we caught, maybe more. We ended up fishing around Lakeside Park and after a couple of hours of trolling shallow with lead balls and Kokabow gear, baited over twenty kokanee. They are getting a little bigger now on average and Tom already has his smoker loaded with them.
