By Dave Graybill

Bass fishing in October? You bet. My friends Dave Eichler and his son Evan and I gave Roses Lake, near Manson gave Roses Lake a try recently and, boy did we have fun. It started slow. We fished for a couple of hours before Dave figured out what the fish wanted and where. Turned out the fish were lying in deeper water than we had been fishing earlier. Instead of casting to the shore we put the boat in 16 to 18 feet of water and cast to 6 or 8 feet of water. We were using a Berkley Chigger Craw, rigged Carolina style. That did the trick. In a couple of hours we were into double digit numbers of small largemouth. We probably could have caught quite a few more if we would have found the trick to get them biting earlier. The bass bite here and in other lakes in the region should continue to be good a while longer. Good weather is forecast for many days ahead, so there is no reason to think that the largemouth and smallmouth bass should quit biting. There’s nothing like a hot bass bite on a fall day!
