By Dave Graybill

There is definitely a shift in the weather happening. I heard the snow level being mentioned, and it has been as low as 6,000 feet. Fall is getting here, and not fast enough for many. Fishing for late summer-run and fall-run kings is sure more pleasant in 70 degree weather than when it’s hundred or more on the river. Fall kings are already being taken on the Columbia in the White Bluffs region and a few anglers are testing the waters below Wanapum Dam at the mouth of Crab Creek. I got a chance to fish both of these spots last year, and found it well worth the trip, for a chance at a bright, fall-run salmon. Thousands of these fish have moved over McNary Dam and are showing up in good numbers even in the Wenatchee stretch of the Columbia. Fall salmon will get a lot of anglers out on the river, but the anticipation of one of the best steelhead seasons ever in our region has even more anglers champing at the bit. I am already stocking up on tackle and replacing needed gear. I would advise other anglers to do the same. There will be a big rush on getting these items as the seasons are announced.
