If you want to get some warm ups in before the opening weekend of lowland lake trout season at the end of the month, there several really good places to get out and practice. Both Roses Lake and Fish Lake, near Lake Wenatchee, have been ice free for a while now, and the rainbow are eager. Anglers fishing Roses Lake are seeing some nice tiger trout mixed in with their catches, and don’t be surprised if you catch a triploid of 5 pounds or even larger at Fish Lake. I have been telling people for years about the great spring fishing for big cutthroat at Omak Lake, and I just got a report from Anton Jones at Darrell and Dad’s Family Guide Service that confirms it. He made a trip up there recently and had a blast. Spring is an excellent time to fish the lake, and he reminds folks that this is a catch-and-release fishery until the end of May. Omak Lake is also a barbless hook, no bait lake year-round. The Lahontan cutthroat that inhabit the lake are beautiful and big. The state record, caught in the 90s weighed 18 pounds, 4 ounces. There’s bigger one waiting for you there for sure.
