By Dave Graybill

I had a chance to sneak up in the evening recently to try my luck on the Icicle River with my fly rod. This first trip of summer took place later than usual. Water flows were higher than in most seasons, and I like the river to somewhat wadable. I found the fishing excellent. The water was still a bit higher than I like in the stretch of river that I was fishing. Wading was a challenge in a couple of spots. I had to put my rod in my teeth and use both hands to hang onto rocks to make it across. The fish were hungry, though. I quit when I had released 30 nice Icicle River rainbow, and there were two nice cutthroat mixed in, too. I had tied on a Stimulator, with an orange body, before I left and I didn’t need to change flies the whole evening. The river is loaded with trout of 8 or 9 inches, and up to 10 or 11 inches. The water temperature of the river is warm enough to allow “wet wading”, but I would recommend wading shoes on the slipper rocks. The Icicle is a beautiful place to fish and an easy one for beginners.
