By Dave Graybill

I finally made it to Potholes Reservoir to try the fishing for walleye. Of course I went when there was a dramatic weather change, with temperatures dropping over ten degrees from the previous day. I had a pretty stiff wind most of the day, too. The good news was my fishing partner, Tom Verscheuren, got the biggest largemouth bass he ever caught and also was able to check off walleye as one of the species he has caught here in Eastern Washington. We tried fishing with crank baits most of the day and got only bass. I switched to bottom bouncers and Dutch Fork Custom Lures Turtle Back spinners in my favorite Blue Tiger color for the last hour or so. This is how we caught our walleye. I should have switched to these earlier. We did get one catfish doing this, but with weather change the walleye sure preferred this method over crank baits. At least the day I was out there. I am eager to get back to Potholes. The fall fishing was really good last year. Although the fish we got were small, some really big walleye are caught in the fall on Potholes Reservoir every year.
