The annual “April Fools” opener is coming up this weekend on Saturday, April 1st. This is one that anglers across the state look forward to every year. A couple dozen lakes dot the landscape in the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge and the Seep Lakes Wildlife Area and this is the first chance that anglers get to fish them every spring. Many of the lakes offer fishing for rainbow trout and are at their best in the early spring. The fishing for largemouth bass, walleye, bluegill and crappie can the best found anywhere. There is camping available on many of them, and many anglers will bring their campers, trailers and RVs for an extended stay this time of year. Some of the lakes are large enough to accommodate big boats, and others are fished from shore or float tubes and pontoons. Shore access is very good. A good way to find the location of almost all of the lakes in these wildlife areas is to stop by Mar Don Resort on the shore of Potholes Reservoir, and ask for one of the maps they have prepared. Also, be sure to check the Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for special rules on the lakes.
