By Dave Graybill

Once again I gave Billy Clapp Lake a try for kokanee, and once again these fish pretty much ignored me. I trolled near the island and a couple of other spots further up lake, and never got a hit or even saw any evidence that kokanee existed here. I’m not saying that they have disappeared, but I sure haven’t been able to get them to hit with any consistency this season. Fortunately, I had fished Banks Lake the day before and had all my walleye gear along. Our friends Brian Muller and Velma Dunkin from Moses Lake were perfectly happy to try for walleye instead of the fruitless trolling for kokanee. We were into fish immediately after shifting gears and really had a great time with the walleye. We fished the east shore a couple of miles below the powerhouse at Summer Falls, and had a lot of bites. We did hook some walleye, too, but the fish weren’t big enough to keep. I am sure that there are some big walleye in Billy Clapp, we just didn’t run into any. I want to go back and try the smallmouth bass fishing here, too. The wind blew us off before we could give a serious effort.
