By Dave Graybill

The summer run salmon season is off to a great start this year. In spite of the low counts over the dam so far anglers in the Wenatchee area did pretty well. When I checked in on the salmon derby at Hooked on Toys on Friday morning they already had 22 salmon registered. The largest was over 35 pounds! It will take a fish over 22 pounds to claim one of the top ten places in the derby. I had reports of slow fishing further up stream, at Wells and the Brewster Pool, but the fishing at Walla Walla point in the Wenatchee area is better than usual for the early season. The Super Bait Cut Plug or herring is getting the best results. I started the salmon season once again with Shane Magnuson, Upper Columbia Guide Services, below Wanapum Dam. The conditions were much better than last year and the action about the same. Anglers caught fish here and there throughout the morning, and our boat put three kings in the box before noon. Shane put me on a fish that was just under 20 pounds and the fish checker said that it was one of the better fish seen that day.
