If I was going to choose where to go salmon fishing this week, I would definitely lean toward White Bluffs. Sure, the road into the launch is a rotten ride. Sure, the launch itself will be packed. But if you want to have the best shot at catching a big, bright fall Chinook, that’s where I would put in. I have fished at White Bluffs twice in the last week and Vernita and below Wanapum off Crab Creek, all in the past week or so. The best fishing I have observed was going on at White Bluffs. Not only are the best numbers of kings being landed down here, but the there are good numbers of very large fishing being taken. Shane Magnuson got a 47-pounder here just a week ago. The big run of fall fish has yet to appear, and just the leading edge is arriving. Still anglers are scoring best at White Bluffs. I am not saying that fish are not being taken at Wanapum and in the Vernita stretch of the Columbia, they are, but the action is significantly better at White Bluffs. Fishing is bound to improve as the fish push upstream, and there are over 1,000 fall runs a day crossing Priest Rapids, but my money remains on White Bluffs.
