On my way back from Montana I made a short side trip to Vernita. I wanted to check on the fishing, as it should be getting good in this stretch. I stopped at the main launch above bridge and talked to three or four boats as they came off the water. The first boat had zero. They were from Idaho and were going to be there till the season closed. The next boat had caught four kings, a jack and four steelhead, one of which was a hatchery keeper. The two anglers had just pulled Wiggle Warts all day. The next boat in was a guided sled with four anglers aboard. They had caught six kings that day. They ranged in size from jack-like to about 40 pounds. This boat had been running bait-wrapped Kwik Fish or Flatfish all day. The day before the same group had only been able to scratch up one fish. So, it remains a day-to-day affair at Vernita, but when it’s on there are boats that are having a blast. I would sure like to get down there again myself. There are lots of fish on the way, and I would like a shot at some of these bright fall-run kings.
