I had meetings to attend in Moses Lake and Ephrata the other day, and I just had to stop by Rocky Ford Creek to see what was happening on my favorite winter stream. I pulled into the first parking area and walked out onto the bridge, where I usually can see several large rainbow holding in the current. What I saw was a carpet of weeds swaying in the current and no trout. I did see fish feeding on a blue wing olive hatch above the bridge, though, so I know they were there. They just couldn’t use this spot near the bridge yet. The long and warm fall has allowed the weeds to continue to hold onto the bottom. When it gets colder it will go away. When I checked in with Darc Knobel at the Desert Fly Angler he assured me that there is still plenty of water that can be fished on the Ford. The tried and true methods, like a scud under an indicator, or stripping a leech will still get action at Rocky Ford. Seeing those big trout rising sure got me excited. I will be planning a trip to the Ford very soon.
