By Dave Graybill

Sockeye fishing on Lake Wenatchee is still very good. The reports I got last week indicated that success has been very high lately. I talked to a good friend that said this was his best season ever on Lake Wenatchee. However, if you want to get in on the action I would suggest that you do it soon. Although there are plenty of fish to catch in the lake, the condition of the fish is turning south as the sockeye get nearer to the time when they have the urge to move into the White River for spawning. A sockeye that is just showing its spawning colors may still be worth putting on the grill, and the number of them that meet these criteria is diminishing. Some suggest that the lake should close, but it seems that anglers themselves determine when the lake is not worth fishing. The fishing pressure drops off sharply when they see that most of their fish should not be kept. There will be plenty of them making it to the spawning beds again this year, and we hopefully will see many more consistent sockeye seasons on Lake Wenatchee.
