As most of you know, Eric Granstrom and I are invited to participate in some great experiences, and most recently we traveled to The Dalles, Oregon. The Dalles Chamber of Commerce had us come down to learn more about all the great things the area has to offer. We are both familiar with the fishing available on the Columbia River down there, but we are going to spend some time on the Deschutes River, fishing for steelhead. I have special memories of the Deschutes. I haven’t fished for steelhead on the river, but I did learn to fly fish on this stream. I used to float from Warm Springs to Maupin and tossed flies for the famous red side rainbow that are abundant in the river. My friends tolerated my novice attempts and helped me advance to a level that allowed me to enjoy the challenges of catching even the biggest rainbow the Deschutes had in this stretch. I sure hope I am up to the challenge of catching a steelhead. Our guide will be Grant Putnam, of Grants Outdoor Adventures, and I am sure he will give me the best opportunity. I will share our experience in future reports.
