The forecast was for heavy wind at Banks Lake last Tuesday, but my brother Rick and I decided to risk it. We had a great day on Banks the week before, getting limits of walleye on Barker Flats. He said if the wind was blowing we could always run into Devils Punchbowl and get away from most of it. That’s what we did. We got away from most of the wind, but it was still blowing pretty good. We started in 16 feet of water and trolled spinners and were in the weeds. We had to strip the weeds off our baits regularly, but it was worth it. We were getting fish. We moved from the top end of the Punchbowl to the area along the highway, and tried to stay in 15 feet of water. I got some fish on my Dutch Fork Blue Tiger spinner, but we had our best luck fishing with Slow Death Hook rigs with just a nightcrawler, no beads or blades. A good bite came on and we really filled the cooler. We had our limits and were headed for the Northrup launch before one o’clock. The Punchbowl is the where to go when the wind blows on Banks.
