By Dave Graybill

I got a call from a friend from Moses Lake that the trout fishing at Billy was terrific. He said he and his buddies were getting limits of trout of 16 to 20 inches. So I made a call to my brother in law Tom Verschueren. He immediately got his boat out of mothballs. We headed for Billy Clapp on Monday morning. It had been years since I had been on the lake, but nothing had changed. The launch dock was still there, and although the water was low it was easy to get the boat in the water. We ran up the lake past the big basalt island and put the bow mount down. Before the second rod was out and the boat was up to speed, I got a hit. We were running a variety of joint Rapalas in orange or rainbow. The action really picked up when the boat was running at 1.8 to 2.0 mph. In less than an hour we had six in the cooler, and they were all 15 to 16 inches long and very fat and deep bodied. Right at 9 o’clock it really slowed down. We caught a couple more fish, but the bite was way off. I suggest that you are on the water no later than 7 to get the best action right now at Billy Clapp. If you want some quality trout fishing it’s the place to go.
