By Dave Graybill

March 1st is the first of three opening days of trout seasons here in Eastern Washington. This is the earliest and is quite popular as it gives anglers that have been cooped up over the winter a good reason to get out and wet a line. There is another early opening day in the Columbia Basin on April 1st, and then the granddaddy of them all with the lowland lake season opening the fourth Saturday in April. Fishing is often very good at lakes like Burke and Quincy. They are heavily planted with fry each fall and are usually fat 11- to 12-inchers by spring. This year there should be a very good number of carryover rainbow available to anglers, as pressure was light on these two lake the balance of the season last year. Martha Lake, which is just east of the town of George, always surprises anglers with not only very good catches of rainbow, but some particularly large carryovers. A lake that is making a strong come back from several lack luster seasons is Lake Lenore, just north of Soap Lake. The Lahontan cutthroat that inhabit the lake provided very good to excellent fishing last fall and it is expected to be very good when it opens March 1st. Check the regs on Lenore. It has special rules in the early season.
