By Dave Graybill

I have had the urge to fish Omak Lake this fall, and my wish came true on Wednesday of this week. Mike McKee, of Mike’s Meats and Seafood at the Pybus Market, and I first stopped at the Wal Mart store in Omak to get out Tribal licenses. Mike also bought a net, as I had forgotten to bring one. Boy, are we glad he did that. We used the Mission Bay launch, which is just eight miles out of town. We caught a couple of fish right in the launch bay and then headed for the south end. We found Jeff Witkowski, of Darrell and Dads Family Guide Service, doing laps along the north shore, and we did the same. We were trolling on down riggers, putting our baits 40 to 50 feet down along the shore, and more shallow at the bottom end of the lake. I had on my favorite red J-Plug that worked and Mike had a U-20 Flatfish. I also caught fish on a white-and-red Needlefish and a 4-inch Mag Lip Flatfish. We were fighting the wind most of the day, but we still boated 20 cutthroat. Most were 14 to 16 inches, but we had several that were 20 inches. We got two that were well over 22 inches and weighed 4 to 5 pounds.
