Salmon anglers will be watching the results of the CCA Salmon Derby in Wenatchee with interest, as this will be a good gauge of the summer run fishing on the upper Columbia River. Fish are being taken from below Wanapum Dam all the way up to the Brewster Pool now, but success varies day to day. Summer run fishing is improving as more fish move into the area and settle in to spots like the Brewster Pool and below Wells Dam. The area above Wells Dam is open to summer run fishing now, and can be a very good spot to take salmon that have paused to rest before shooting on up to the Brewster area. Fans of sockeye salmon fishing will be encouraged to hear that as many as 500 fish a day are moving over the dam in the Tumwater Canyon on the Wenatchee River. They are headed for Lake Wenatchee and are on a good schedule for a season on the lake. Early forecasts are for over 40,000 sockeye to return to Lake Wenatchee this year, and indications so far are good to at least exceed the needed escapement of 27,0000.
