Anglers here will be shifting their focus from the upper Columbia to Lake Wenatchee as the sockeye season opens here on Saturday, August 3rd. According to the Department of Fish and Wildlife the escapement number has been reached and the excess fish are there for the taking by sport anglers. This is a very popular fishery on Lake Wenatchee. Hordes of anglers launch at the State Park, the only launch available, and make their way onto the scenic lake. I enjoy this one as I know just about everyone trolling by, and really like seeing boats full of families and grandkids catching fish. The limit will be two fish per day, and selective rules are in place for this season, and a night closure is in effect as well. Preferred gear for sockeye is a size 0 chrome dodger, a short leader with two closely tied hooks, and now anglers are adding shrimp to the leading hook. You can start shallow in the morning and go deeper as the day brightens. Boaters should have everything loaded when they hit the launch to keep their time putting in at a minimum. Everyone should do their best to keep the line moving as fast as possible.
