Good news anglers. Sockeye fishing is open July 1st, along with the fishing for summer run Chinook. I remember one year when we were fishing below Wanapum on the first and were releasing incidental sockeye that we caught. We didn’t know that we could have kept them, the announcement came out so late. Nice to know well in advance. The upper Columbia and even the Okanogan to the first bridge is open—except—from Wells Dam to the Highway 173 Bridge in Brewster. This area will open to sockeye and Chinook fishing on the 16th. This allows for fish headed up the Methow. The limit this year is six salmon, two of which may be adult Chinook and two may be adult sockeye. Remember guys, use barbless hooks and bait is allowed. I was very pleased to see this announcement. I figured I would see it after the Columbia below Priest Rapids opened to sockeye fishing. So when you go through all your gear to get set up for salmon fishing, drag out the sockeye gear, too! I will be fishing with Shane Magnuson on the 1st, as usual, and will be sure to let you know where we went and what kind of success we had.
