I just got back from a trip to the Oregon coast. I have gone down for the past three years to fish for kings and coho that are returning to the Nehalem River. It is exciting fishing, as we are “in the jaws” of the jetties that lead to the ocean and it gets pretty interesting when the tides change. Typically we get some kings to 40 pounds and coho to 16 and battling them in these heavy currents among the other boats is a real thrill. Last year I fought on fish for an hour and eight minutes! This year I arrived at the same time that a big storm hit the coast. We saw sustained winds of 25 mph and gust to over 40. Needless to say we didn’t venture out in that weather. It did give me some time to explore the area a bit more, including a stop at the hatchery on the Nehalem River, where they were sorting out coho for later spawning. There were some beauties in there. Now I am planning to get back down to Vernita to do battle with some of the fall kings that continue to pile up in the Hanford Reach.
