It’s a big day here in Central Washington, as steelhead season begins on most of our area streams. Here’s where I think there will be good opportunities to catch fish in the early season. Every year anglers do well at the mouth of the Wenatchee River. Steelhead stack up here, waiting for higher, cooler water, before dispersing further up the river. There are some other good holes in the lower river, such as Sleepy Hollow and a couple of spots below and above the Monitor Bridge. On the Columbia River I had early success off the mouth of the Entiat River, fishing bobbers and jigs. I have had some good luck below Wells Dam when the season opened, but I have better luck later in the season here. Near Pateros there are a couple of great spots to look for steelhead. The docks will be filled with anglers, and they will get some fish, as will anglers that fish in the Estuary and right below the bridges where the Methow enters the Columbia. There will be some fish taken near the rocks, a ways down stream from Pateros, too. It may be early to find fish at Bridgeport, but the Blow Hole and the Pines would be worth a look.
