I made it back down to Vernita to try for fall Chinook, the upriver brights that this area is famous for. This time Eric Granstrom and I took our camera gear and jumped on board Shane Magnuson’s boat, with three other anglers. We ran down below the bridge and Magnuson ran out some plugs. These had worked pretty well the day before. However, after a drift with no action, he switched over to eggs and divers, and we moved a bit further down stream. Wow. Everything changed in a hurry. We got a big fish on the first drift and on the second drift and the third and so on. We boated a total of 13 adults and three jacks and decided to hang it up by 1 p.m. This was pretty fancy fishing, even by Vernita standards. I would recommend that if you want to have a ball catching frisky kings, better get down to the Hanford Reach and get after these kings. If you don’t have any eggs try jet divers and herring or bait wrapped Mag Lip Flatfish or Hognose Flatfish. All of these methods will work. Remember, you can take three adults down here now, wild or not, through October 22nd.
