In just a week the steelhead season will open here in Central Washington. In addition to the main stem Columbia River, the tributaries, including the Wenatchee, Methow and Okanogan rivers will also open to steelhead fishing. One of the most popular spots on the opener will be at the mouth of the Wenatchee. Anglers will line up here to cast spoons, spinners and bobbers and jigs. The first morning is usually very hot and then falls off when fish are chased either back into the Columbia or up stream. I will probably start my season where the Methow River enters the Columbia. I will fish right at the bridges in Pateros, up in the estuary, where bait isn’t allowed, and down river on the Columbia by The Rocks. Anglers will be scattered along the banks of the Methow, and I expect the lower river to be best when the season opens. Remember, barbless hooks are required everywhere, but bait is allowed on the main stem Columbia. There is a two fish limit this year, with all wild fish released without being removed from the water.
