By Dave Graybill

I called my fishing buddy Brian Nielson to keep my promise to take him to Banks Lake to do some bass fishing. He said he would like to, but he was busy pre-fishing for the walleye tournament that was coming up. He asked if I would like to join him and his partner Cody Dillon, and I said sure. Thursday looked like a perfect day for walleye fishing. It was threatening rain and there was slight chop on the water. Well, the fishing wasn’t good. In fact, it sucked. We marked fish at all the spots we checked out. We got lots of bites, landed some perch, but no walleye. Brian and I agreed that we couldn’t remember a time when we had come off Banks without a single walleye. I worried that our poor luck would carryover to the tournament. Not to worry. He sent me a photo of a walleye he caught on the first day, and it was a whopper. I bet it was the big fish of the day. If you want to find out how the walleye fishing is at Banks, call the folks at Coulee Playland. They can tell you how the tournament turned out.
